Cleaning Sterling Silver Jewelry
Sterling silver is a precious metal that is actually an alloy of silver (92.5%) and some other metal, most often copper. The reason that other metals are alloyed with silver is that silver by itself is too soft for most jewelry applications. So copper provides the strength. Unfortunately, it is also the ingredient that causes sterling to tarnish. There are many commercial products that you can use to remove tarnish, but here is an easy way using ingredients that most of us have in our kitchen. 1. Boil some water 2. Line a shallow pan (I use a pie plate) with aluminum foil 3. Lay your jewelry on the foil so that the pieces are not touching each other, but are all in contact with the foil 4. Sprinkle ordinary baking soda to lightly cover each piece of silver 5. Sprinkle salt lightly over each piece 6. Carefully pour boiling water over the pieces, the baking soda and salt mixture will bubble up 7. Let the pieces sit for a 10-20 minutes and then rinse in cool water and dry with a soft cloth This works best with lightly tarnished pieces. Heavier tarnish may require more than one treatment. This process works by chemical reaction, the baking soda releases the tarnish (oxidation) from the silver and the aluminum foil attracts it. Caution: I wouldn't use this method with jewelry pieces containing pearls, turquoise or other soft stones. |
